Dr. Hoban and her staff are really great. They are very warm and friendly which helps put children at ease. It is clear to me that many people enjoy taking their child to Dr. Hoban because it took me a month to get a consultation and the siting room filled up quickly.
The reason for the three stars is because Dr. Hoban decided against a procedure that I believe would benefit my daughter. My daughter had breastfeeding issues from day one and I took her to several lactation consultants for this problem. Both the LCs and her pediatrician missed that she had a very obvious lip tie and minor tongue tie that caused her to not be able to effectively breastfeed. We recently moved to Las Vegas and Dr. Hoban came highly recommended as someone who corrects lip/tongue ties. We waited a month to get in with her and my daughter is now 8 months old. We have had issues with slow weight gain as well as difficulty with her taking solids. These issues were brought up to Dr. Hoban.
Her examine confirmed that she does in fact have a significant lip tie and minor tongue tie, both of which can cause feeding issues, cavities, and later can cause speech problems if not corrected. However, Dr. Hoban suggested a "wait and see" approach and does not want to correct the ties until she develops MORE problems, specifically she stated she wanted to wait until 2-3 to see if speech problems develop. Personally, this does not indicate PREVENTIVE medicine and I am not satisfied with this response. It has been such a battle to have my daughter diagnosed. I was robbed of our nursing relationship due to uneducated professionals, and now I have to wait until my child becomes developmentally/speech delayed, risking feeding set backs, and possible tooth decay/damage until a revision is considered.
I feel like the reason she did not consider a revision at this time was very much based on the fact that we are no longer breastfeeding so therefore she doesn't see an urgency in correcting the problem.
I am very saddened and disappointed in this "highly recommended" professional. I now have to research yet another professional who will correctly revise ties and then wait for that appointment.. all while my daughter is struggling to gain weight and eat solids and delaying her speech development.
I only recommend Dr. Hoban for normal dentistry or if you are still breastfeeding.
