  • Excellent selection of artisan breads, pastries and desserts. Andrea came from an Italian family of bakers and was providing Alimento much of their baked goods before they closed down to revamp their restomarket. The space which is downstairs from Wvrst is raw and open, everything is on view including his crew preparing all kinds of delicious goodies in the kitchen, and all of the biscottis, cookies and sweets are nicely presented on an expansive butcher block counter under glass. You could go there various times: getting their freshly baked bread in the morning to getting a panini for lunch to enjoying a refreshing italian soda and almond cookie in the afternoon to having an excellent Illy espresso with their signature biscottis after dinner at a nearby restaurant. They also have a small selection of imported italian cooking goods and staples. I must have tried almost everything there and it's all good, but some of my favorite bites were the bitter almond cookie which looks like a delicate slightly curled thin lady finger. It is soft with a sweet almond flavour. I really liked the savoury biscotti which they were experimenting on. It was a sundried tomato and chilli peper biscotti which has a nice spicy kick combined with the slightly chewy sweet bits of tomato. I could see this go really well with soup, just on it's own. Their crema desserts which are beautifully presented in squarish plastic cups are like a very delicate panna cotta (in three or four varieties) which just melts in your mouth as soon at it hits your tongue. Everything is made with love and pride and you could really taste it. A boxed selection of their cookies would make a perfect gift for anyone.
