  • Ah the Ex. As a child, I was never a fan. Hours of mindless wandering, competing at the game booths against grown ups (which meant never winning a toy)... It wasn't my favourite place to go! Now, as a grown up, I am still losing at the game booths - I just have more money to fork out for retries! It is still a waste of time wandering around, but I am less limited in the things I can do. I can now try out all the strange foods that one can only find at the Ex - and it seems that our cry for culinary absurdity makes food vendors up the crazy every year. This year - Deep Fried Cola, the Behemoth Burger and the Donut Burger all take centre stage. The Food Building at the CNE is for sure one of the busiest spots. Finding a table is like battling shoppers on Boxing Day for a parking spot. The lineup at Epic Burgers & Waffles, home to both the Behemoth Burger and the Donut Burger was just as infamous, but it moved along quickly. The Casino is probably tied for busiest place at the Ex. I tried my luck at the tables, and came out $20 richer. Nothing to Yelp about! The grandmas and grandpas sitting next to me had their stacks of $100 chips that put me to shame, but I don't have all day to spend enclosed by 4 walls with barely any sunlight. I now know how addictive gambling can be! The dealers could stand to smile a bit, and be more entertaining. They all looked like they came from some country under military dictatorship where smiling was punishable by death. The games were the usual rip-off although I did end up with a minion from the darts game, and a Curious George from the Bullseye game. Overall, definitely a fun place to go with a significant other, or a group of friends. I don't know that I'll go every year... but its worth it once in awhile.
