| - I came here on a Sunday night during my weekend trip to Pittsburgh. It had come recommended by a friend. It's a Caribbean and South American fusion themed restaurant.
The restaurant is aesthetically pleasing and inviting. The restaurant opens up to a seemingly well-stocked bar with recessed lighting under the counter-top illuminating bar stools resembling congo drums. The physical space is small, yet warm and intimate. Kaya would likely make a perfect happy hour and possibly date venue. Their outdoor seating is also nice on a nice warm day and allows you to take in the Strip district while enjoying your meal. Ambiance - (4/5)
The food was a mixed bag. I ordered the Jamaican Jerk wings appetizer and they were tasty. 10 wings for $9. The Jerk seasoning had a nice kick to it and it was perfectly balanced with a palate cooling cilantro cream sauce. They were juicy and well cooked. I would most definitely order these again.
However, I ordered the fish tacos based on the rave reviews on Yelp and was disappointed. The portions are large and for $17, you would expect them to be. The plate came with 3 corn tortillas with generous portions of fried tilapia and coleslaw. I am talking about Cheesecake Factory-sized portions. To be honest, the taste was also not too far off from the Cheesecake Factory's either. Not bad, but definitely not great. I think the huge mounds of coleslaw and the thousand island dressing they called "spicy crème fraîche" threw me off. The tilapia and corn tortillas are the true stars of the dish, but they are only masked amongst these other ingredients. Sometimes less is more and I feel like if Kaya eased up on the sauce and slaw, then the dish would benefit overall. The option of getting 2 tacos for reduced price may also be a good idea.
Food - (3.5/5)
Their drink menu is extensive with 12 different mixed drinks and 18 beers on draft. In addition, they host a happy hour Monday through Friday from 5 to 7 pm where draft beers and cocktails are half-off. That's quite the deal and if I lived in Pittsburgh, I would probably be a regular.
Drinks - (4/5)
The service was okay. Our waitress was polite, but appeared very disinterested. Maybe it was an off day or a case of the Sundays. The drinks and appetizers came out quickly, but it took another 25-30 minutes before we got our entrées.
Service - (3/5)
All in all, I still had a positive dining experience at Kaya. If i'm ever back in town, I would not hesitate to return. However, I was disappointed with the fish tacos and for this reason I will have to give them a 3.5/5 rating.
Overall - (3.5/5)
