  • This is the best gym in the Pittsburgh area, I have no doubt. I've been coming here off and on since 2002, and it's remained just as great. Some of the perks: ~ It's 24-hours from Monday at 6am until Saturday at 8pm. The after-10pm time is among my favorite times to work out, although I am more often available and in an exercise-mood in the mornings, when it can be crowded with senior citizens, but no bodybuilder types. ~ It's super clean. They make a clean facility a priority here, including the locker rooms and showers. The cleaning staff is also super friendly and helpful, so if you notice a dispenser is out of towels or a hair dryer isn't working, they will fix the problem for you. ~ All around, it's a positive environment. I've never felt intimidated, or like I didn't belong, even in my most out-of-shape moments. There's a wide range of people that come here, and everyone is made to feel welcome by the staff and the other members. ~ The staff keeps up with the latest fitness crazes. When Zumba first took off, they added Zumba classes. Any time a new piece of equipment starts to gain popularity, they put it in as well. The classes are free and a lot of fun. There are yoga classes, step aerobics, lifting, kickboxing, boot camp-style classes, and water aerobics, so there's something for everyone. ~ The trainers are free, and they're great. I've been going to Trainer Mike since I started coming to the gym, and I can honestly say that his workouts helped me get in the best shape of my life. He in particular keeps on top of the latest fitness information and makes changes to your workout to make sure you're getting the most out of it. You can just tell the trainers like their jobs here, and they're great even with the elderly members, or if you've got health issues or physical limitations. It's very much an individualized experience. ~ The gym is super cheap. It just recently jumped up to $43 a month, but it had been solid at $41 for as long as I've been going there before that. Included in that is all the free training and classes. The cons of Club Julian are far fewer than the pros. It does get a little crowded during peak hours, especially for cardio equipment, and the pool area is small and almost always full. The parking lot is also a little iffy, so you sometimes wind up having to park in the lot attached to Dicks Sporting Goods (although I guess you can look at that as just adding to your cardio!). All in all, I love this gym, and I plan on continuing to be a member here for a long time. They're very generous with guest passes if you want to check it out beforehand, and you can always schedule a training appointment to get acclimated to the equipment. They also run a lot of deals on membership, so you can often get a discounted enrollment fee (March is their anniversary month, so they always run specials then).
