| - As a North Scottsdale resident, I hate to admit it but good sushi and sashimi are kind of hard to come by. This is not to say that there is a dearth of sushi places available, just that most places suck. However, Hiro had been recommended by several friends and, of course, there are glowing Yelp reviews. So it was with high hopes that a friend and I stopped by for lunch a couple of weeks ago.
As mentioned in other reviews, the decor is not much to look at. However, I have had good luck with other sushi places in strip malls (Hana, Yen & Yasu), so this did not really affect me. Bring on the fresh fish and I'll forgive just about anything. And Hiro delivered on this front. The Toro was delicious and the Uni was just right. We also took a run at the Hiro Roll, thinking that the restaurant's namesake roll would be a shining example. Unfortunately, the flavors did not quite meld for me and the eel sauce was anything but special. Perhaps it was the asparagus . . . I addition, I was not really impressed with the the flavors in the miso soup - it kind of felt like they were just going through the motions here.
