An anticipated Asian dessert restaurant opens downtown near UofT. Not to be confused with the Dessert Kitchen uptown as they mentioned they're not affiliated, it doesn't quite meet the uptown quality of Asian eats. Nonetheless, it wasn't at bad spot!
Here's my review:
The decor is calming as the room is bright white, cute wooden tables and wall decor, and fake plants. There's some high stools and modern black and white chairs which makes it great place to hang out and get a quick dessert with friends.
The service was really good as our server was really attentive. He checked up on us to see if we needed water without over doing it, offer to answer questions or offer suggestions if we were having difficulties with menu choices, and his smile and warm demeanour made it a pleasant visit.
Onto the menu, you've got a selection of parfaits, shaved ice, Hong Kong style egg waffles with ice cream, soup desserts (more familiarly known as 'tong sui' if you're Cantonese) and some other items you may be used to at your typical Asian dessert place. There also have some unique items like "ice ramen" and it's some jello that looks like you dip in some syrup and "kanten ".
I ordered the Taste of Uji which was a matcha style parfait with red bean, rice mochi, and soft serve. I guess I wanted the dessert to be more prevalent in it's matcha flavour as it felt like it was just a vanilla soft serve. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't great.
The same goes for my friends shaved ice. It was what was expected, but I felt it could use some improvement as it could be slightly bigger in portion or the consistency of the shaved ice could be more creamy (for my preference).
Finally, my friend got a "choice" item as it was nominated to be a winner. It was a grape dessert with ice, grape seaweed, rice mochi, grapes and some other fun stuff. The texture was interesting as the grape seaweed didn't have much flavour and popped like fish roe. Unfortunately, the grape syrup drizzled over the snowcone-like ice was extremely sweet and as my friend was nearing the end of his dessert, the syrup and ice water mixed to become way too sweet.
At the end, our server asked for feedback as it was a soft opening to see what they could improve on for food items. It was cash only since it was their second day of soft opening and also got 20% off. I'm sure if they take the feedback suggested, this could turn into a really popular spot.
Ultimately, there are some interesting items I'd like to try and it isn't a bad spot for downtown as there aren't too many around the area. However, some adjustments to the quality of desserts could be improved.
