| - I used to love this place. Really, I did. Great selection of beer at reasonable prices, what's not to love? After shopping here for 6 years, I'm probably never coming back after this weekend -- maybe if it's born out of necessity, but there tons of other options where the employees aren't dirtbags.
So one guy who works here specifically has a chip on his shoulder. Clearly many of these bad reviews here must be about him, which is actually quite hilarious.
So my story goes like this: I came into the shop armed with the keg and tap I rented for the weekend. Because I know *very* little about open container laws, I didn't realize it was poor form for me to have the tap still attached to the empty keg.
Angry Tops guy follows me into the shop (he was scowling at me over a cigarette right by the entrance) and proceeds to say, "Fun fact: you're driving around with an open container ... AND bringing an open container into my shop."
So, disclaimer here: let's take a moment to appreciate my stupidity about open container laws. Whoops! I'm dumb. Now I know. It was never my intention to put their liquor license in jeopardy, although I seriously doubt it ever was based off my mistake.
Anyway ...
I apologized immediately. Nevermind that he had an opportunity to stop me from entering beforehand. Sideburns guy says nothing. He prints out the receipt and thrusts it in my direction. I sign it and ask if we're all set, remain polite. He says nothing and doesn't even acknowledge me.
Exemplary customer service, guy. Suppose I'll purchase expensive kegs somewhere else. I arrived thinking, "hey, maybe I'll make myself a sixer" and immediately abandoned that possibility. Tops Liquor, this guy is losing you business.
It's any wonder Mr. Veruca Salt has been working here for years. Only logical explanation is he's part of management, otherwise he'd absolutely be fired.
It's sad people like him can safely stay in business, because hey, Tempe -- but I'll at least be taking my beer money some place where it's more appreciated and the staff doesn't act like snotty children.
