| - I didn't luv it tonight.
Luv It Frozen Custard is a local institution that boasts on its web site a history of over four decades. They're a walk-up, no-seats type of dessert shop and offer a rotating but still modest selection of flavors of this cousin to ice cream, distinguished mainly by the additional presence of egg yolks. I'd heard about ownership changes that may have affected the quality of this shop's product and hoped that they weren't true, but I still didn't take advantage of any opportunities to stop by until tonight.
This morning, I received a phone notification about an early birthday offer by the FiveStars customer loyalty app (think stamp cards, but digital). The gift: a free sundae! I only got the frozen custard during my first visit, so I was unfamiliar with how their sundaes work. The employee explained that you can add your own toppings or go with any of several pre-defined combinations on the menu.
I scanned the list for something with hot fudge and found the "Banana Fudge Krumble" ($5.75), which also contains sliced bananas, crumbled Oreo-esque cookies, and a maraschino cherry. These toppings were all fine, although I was sad that the fudge wasn't drizzled over the top. Visual appeal, folks! I maxed out on 3 flavors and chose pumpkin, gingerbread, and maple walnut. The flavors are all pretty generic and don't taste homemade.
The real downfall of my dessert was actually that one of the frozen custards (perhaps the gingerbread) contained a chunk of ice crystals. You simply can't be serving that stuff, man. It's simply poor quality control which I've seldom witnessed at ice cream shops, gelaterias, and another local frozen custard shop.
I wasn't very dissatisfied overall, but I won't return to Luv-It Frozen Custard any time soon. It's not that convenient and I can find superior frozen desserts all over town.
