BEWARE: DO YOUR RESEARCH!! After being told I would need a multi-level fusion I started researching possible alternatives. Laser Spine Institute came up several times in a search for fusion alternatives. I read their website and the testimonials. I thought that it wouldn't hurt to pursue this based on their "90% + satisfaction rating".
I contacted them and they called back within a couple of hours. Long story short, I allowed them to pull my MRI reports and waited with crossed fingers to hear if I was a "viable candidate" for their minimal invasion surgery.
When their representative called to say that I was a candidate I was quite excited. Then she stated that the doctors could see "no reason" why a multi-level fusion was necessary. I told her that my scoliosis was a huge factor. She stated that the MRI report didn't say anything about scoliosis and that "lots of people have curvatures".
Alarm bells went off as I have had 2 very reputable doctors discuss with me the problems this condition is causing. I still gave her my insurance information to check coverage.
Since I was now a "candidate" I started research on this company outside of their website and their testimonials. What I found was that for every 1-2 great reviews there was at least one horror story. They either get 5 stars or 1 with very few in-between. The horror stories involve the procedures and the results, the amount of money that the patient was forced to pay up front as well as unreturned fees for procedures that were cancelled. Upon further research I found that several insurance companies will not even cover surgeries performed in this facility due to efficacy issues. According to the representative my "out of network" coverage would cover a little bit but they wanted $15000.00 up front. I am also out of the area so this does not take traveling expense into account.
OF COURSE, with an approximately 60% satisfaction rate and the other 40% completely the opposite, there is NO WAY I would pay $15 let alone $15000.00 to put myself in these people's hands.
