I want to be able to give a place like this 5 stars but almost gave it 2..
I love the idea of Local and go out of my way to support places like this.
The storefront is extremely homespun and looks like it could be in a third world country. The business name "the grocery" is haphazardly scrawled across the facade, (not saying this is necessarily a bad thing). Upon entrance, the first thing I noticed on several occasions was severely wilted produce to my left and a table of bread to my right left out in the open with tons of flies on it. Definitely not an appetizing way to start.
I expected the place to be kind of expensive considering it is so tiny and in a blighted area of town, though I typically don't mind paying extra for quality small businesses that are trying to do something conscious.
I have ordered several sandwiches here myself and with friends. I would say they aren't necessarily bad but definitely not worth it. I made better sandwiches at age 5. The portions are small and just lacking. My all Ohio roast beef sandwich had 2 small pieces of lunch meat, a slice of cheese, a piece of lettuce and maybe a 1/2 teaspoon of sauce. That would be ok for $4.50 but not double. I don't think I will shop there anymore and hope they can make the necessary changes to stay open.
