| - Even though Habanero's Mexican Grill is located inside, the place reminds us more of a Sidewalk cafe with very friendly waitresses. Mainly because it is located in small strip mall with glass covering the front of the establishment. You don't come here for the ambiance or for a fancy meal. Just like a Sidewalk cafe, you come here for simple food served quickly and to enjoy the company of the friends your eating with. Other terms that might help to describe Habanero's are hole-in-the-wall or mom and pop. They've got "Cantina" stuck on their logo and they do have some nice Happy Hour (3-6pm) prices on their draft beers.
I ordered the Steak a la Mexicana, which was slightly disappointing. When I've ordered this dish at other similar restaurants (Even at places in Mexico), I've always received a whole piece of meat. At Habanero's, they serve this dish Fajita style with the meat sliced up. On top of that, the meat was very tough. Overall, I enjoyed the dish, but those two complaints kinda ruined the food for me. My wife had the Chiles Rellanos, which she enjoyed. We always share and she agreed with my complaints and I thought her dish was average. Also, we ordered a Blackened Fish and a Carne Asada soft shell corn tacos to try. We prefered the Carne Asada over the FIsh, but liked them both.
Our favorite part of the meal was the side of chips, salsa, & guacamole. It came with three sauces and our waitress, thoughtfully, brought us a forth spicier salsa. The quac was fresh and the salsas were great on the chips, but even better as toppings on the tacos.
The biggest complaint is that they don't give you an itemized bill and our final bill was higher than we'd expected. We assume that they charge for the side of chips, salsa, & guacamole, for extra tortillas, and that they didn't give us the Happy Hour price on our drafts. When a waitress asks, "Do you want Chips & Salsa?" you typically don't expect to pay for it.
Overall, we enjoyed our meal, the place was clean, and the employees were really friendly. This would be a great place for a fast lunch or a quick, easy dinner for a busy family or couple in a hurry. We hate leaving this place with the three star rating, but there is a ton of competition in the area.
