| - OMG - was i ever excited when i heard Ladurée was coming to Toronto!! I fell in love with this amazing patisserie when i was in Paris. It became our "go to" place for sweets & desserts while we were there.
I'm not sure what everyone expected when a famous Parisian patisserie arrived at Yorkdale Mall. I read reviews all the time before i try a place out and even if i don't, i don't hype myself up over 5/5 reviews & i take the lower ones and look at what they are based on. NO EXPECTATIONS! Or you're heading for disaster!
I'm surprised at the comments in the lower ratings and what they are for. These are mighty fine macarons and probably the best i've had. Yes, i have tried Nadege & a slew of other places in Paris etc. At Yorkdale, i didn't have any bad service, attitude or any problems plus the wait time was less than 10 min and this was 10 days ago. The wait & line going in and ordering was very organized - no issues!
We had a 2.5 hour wait for lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. I knew this was my destination the minute the gave me the buzzer. I headed over with my son and i knew before i got there that #1 it may not taste as good as Paris, #2 it very well could be double in price. I wasn't in the least bit surprised at the prices. Which US & International stores come to Canada and have lower pricing than their flagship countries? None!
I was ready to spend some $$$ and felt like splurging! Why not? How many times am i going to go back and order a bunch of macarons etc.
They let us in 3 at a time. There were 3 ladies behind the counter. The store is beautifully set up with displays in the window and behind the counter. I knew exactly what i wanted to order without even looking at the available options! Thankfully, all of them were there.
I ordered a box of 24:
Salted Caramel - i love caramel any way it comes! This was & remains one of my favs. I'm not looking for salt with a hint of caramel. This had the perfect ratio if you know what a good salted caramel flavour is.
Lemon - not too tart - full of lemon flavour but just the right amount! Very refreshing!
Passion Fruit - a hidden gem for me, loved this one.
Chocolate - dare i say this was my least favourite? Chocolate flavour was on point, but it seemed too plain compared to everything else. Still very good, but not one i will crave when i think of macarons. I love all of the exotic and fruity flavours of macarons.
Raspberry - another one of my favs - very refreshing. I loved having this sandwiched with the chocolate. What's better than raspberry & dark chocolate?
Maple Syrup - on point, tasted like maple syrup that i would put on my french toast :)
I also bought the Orangettes! OMG - candied orange heaven dipped in dark chocolate! Shhhh...i bought more than 1 box! A fav or mine when we were in Paris!
No difference in quality than when i was in person. Macarons done right. Not hard & crunchy. It practically melted in my hand and had the perfect chewy & flavourful center!
Is it expensive? Heck yeah, but how often are you going to splurge on something like this?!? If our dollar was better, than all of these businesses coming to Canada wouldn't be gouging us with 1.5 time or dbl the price.
One thing they can do to make the experience easier for first time customers? Maybe offer some info on the different flavours, so that customers don't stand around reading the signs on the counter and take forever deciding. I knew what i wanted, but i was never asked if it was my first time there or if i had any questions regarding their products. Great addition to Yorkdale, but would love to see 1-2 more locations around the city and maybe a bit bigger if they are offering seating & lunch/food menus. That's what also makes for long lines & waits - a small shop.
