| - I compare rental car companies to ordering restaurant grilled cheese. There are plenty of options out there, some hyped up, some fancy, some basic, but at the end of the day, you're getting bread and cheese. And regardless of the quince paste or aged gouda or heirloom tomato that's being stuffed into the grilled cheese, if it's served a hot mess, with some sass, or with an upcharge that you're totally unaware of, you're going to be pretty damn annoyed.
Hertz falls squarely into the 2 star category for me.
The Good:
-Online booking is easy
-The cars have been clean
The Meh:
-The location is a pretty decent hike via shuttle from CLE, especially with the mess of the construction for the RNC this summer
-One two occasions I've specifically requested an SUV (winter weather necessity) and they didn't have one available for me when I arrived on time for my reservation. The last thing I want to do is wait 20-30 minutes more for a car that should have been ready for me.
-The gas refill option is so damn expensive. And because of it I opt to refill the tank before bringing it back to the rental lot...there aren't many gas stations close to the rental lot, which is kind of insane.
-The fees and taxes are never well-explained and I feel like I always end up paying more than my rack rate I prepay online.
-I'm a Gold member but the last two times I still have to wait in line for my car assignment. What gives?
At the end of the day I'm still getting my clean rental car, but it's just such a convoluted process here. But frankly, I don't think it would be much better anywhere else.
