| - I got free tickets through Fillaseat to see the cover band called Saved by the 90s. Although the music this band plays is really not my thing, I had worked some very long hours over the holidays that I just wanted to get out for a little bit.
Husband and I went to the HOB on a Saturday night. My tickets says that the doors will open at 8 pm and that I must pick up my tickets between 7 and 7:30 pm. Lucky, my husband works for MGM International, so parking at the Mandalay is free for us. Because of the tragedy that occurred in October, the Mandalay parking lot was empty. And because of this, there was a little sadness in my heart. At this point, I need a little something to cheer me up a bit.
My husband and I made our way to HOB. Now, I've been to this HOB for dining, but never to their concert venue. I thought the events team did a really good job with the outdoor setup. We clearly understood where we needed to go to pick up our tickets. The lady helping us, it was clear that this is just a job for her :|
After picking up our tickets, my husband decided that we should go in right away since they were letting people in. The "bouncer" asked for my ID, which shocked me, because I don't go to "clubs" and I'm old so I'm not used to being carded where as my husband wasn't carded and he looks way younger than I do.
We got to the event person that scanned our tickets and then made our way to security. We followed all the rules, take everything out of your pockets, we were quickly scanned, and my purse was checked. Because we got there early enough, we got through the preliminary stuff rather quickly. And once again, the event people were professional.
Because this was our first time to the concert venue, when we got into the small lobby area, we didn't know where to go. Once we quickly observed our surroundings, we headed downstairs.
As one would expect, when we got into the club, it was dark with bright lights coming from the stage and dim lights around the bar. Because it's been such a long time that I've been to a venue like this, I thought it was small. And more importantly, where's the seats!? :D And with the few pub tables available, why is it barricaded off!? I see, standing room "only" show unless you pay the upgrade. Upgrade was $50 person or $100 bar tab for a table. $100 bar tab for a table isn't bad when you have a bunch of people, but it was just my husband and I. Thanks, but no thanks, we'll stand.
I did go to the bathroom and found it clean. They even have a lady in there with a line of lipsticks, hair sprays, perfumes and paper towels. Classy.
It is a nightclub, so I did expect areas of sticky floors and a bit of sticky counters. My husband ordered a Stella Artois. I believe the big bottle was $12. My husband also ordered fries, which was actually really good and not too bad at $5.
While waiting for our fries, a DJ and his hype man were on stage. Shortly thereafter, they moved their equipment so that the first band could play. The first band, Garage Band, was alright. In the middle of their set, we finished our fries and made our way down towards the front of the stage and found our place against the stairs.
Once the band was done, the DJ came back out along with his "MC" and we partied like it was 1990. And this DJ was a real DJ; he mixed, cut and scratched and played music from the late 80s and early 90s. My husband actually live streamed it on FB and his friends were getting a kick out of it. And to think, it was only 8:30 pm!
The cover band came out, we enjoyed the first 5 songs, the club was getting packed, just a sea of people dancing and having a good time.
My husband wanted to meet the DJ. Turns out the MC is from HI and his wife is the events manager at HOB, also from HI. So, of course, super cool people.
Good venue with big name acts like Santana and Marilyn Manson performing here. Great people. A little pricey, but all-in-all, a really good time. Wait, you got people from HI working for you and a drink called "the 9th island"!? Bumping this up to 4-stars.
