We (two of us) stopped in for a snack since we happened to be on the East Side and had heard about the "cupcakery." It was an early afternoon on a lazy weekend and the place was near to full. The cupcakes looked like toys, they were so small and overloaded with icing. Expensive toys to boot: THREE DOLLARS for one small cupcake? Give me a break, the Riverbend Bakery at the West Side farmer's market sells small pan loaf quick breads for the same price, probably about five times the size.
And as it turns out, based on the one cupcake we sampled, about five times better. Wife went with a cupcake while I called for a berry scone--which was more reasonably priced at something like $2.25 for a much bigger serving. Perhaps the competition against Lazy Jane's for the East Side scone market keeps the Daisy Cafe honest.
My wife's lemon w/lemon buttercream was terrible. As dry as the worst church bakesales. I couldn't believe it was made that day. It should have been sold for 75ยข or a dollar at most.
I'm sorry to report: this place is yet another in the long list of over-hyped Madison restaurants that could not survive in any bigger city. Skip it. The only reason I'm giving it two stars is because the service was cheery and without attitude and the scone was acceptable. But they're not bragging about the scones, are they?
