I used to frequent Clinton's every Tuesday or Wednesday after with a group of friends for the better part of a year. Just steps away from the Christie subway station, Clinton's makes for an easy spot to get meet up after a long day at the office.
I quickly became addicted to their grilled cheese and bacon. I loved being able to choose my bread, cheese, and extra toppings. The fries were great, but the sandwich also came with mixed greens on the side, which helped alleviate a bit of the guilt associated with pub grub.
The big downside to this restaurant is its inconsistency. Some days we would have the best food a pub could offer, hands down. Other days, the grilled cheese would arrive cold and partially unmelted. Sending it back sometimes proved to be a bit of a chore.
Even the service left something to be desired. It is truly detestable to tell a group that you "can't do separate checks" when we frequent the pub every single week and have always gotten separate checks. I'd rather you tell us that you're too lazy to ring up our bills separately, because then at least I'd know you were being honest. One time we asked for separate bills (in a group of about 8) and everyone got them - except for me and my boyfriend. The server assumed that since we were holding hands we must have wanted to pay together (note: we didn't).
It's been awhile since I've been to Clinton's (our weekly meet-ups have moved further east), but I'd go back (provided they're still serving super tasty grilled cheese sandwiches).
