| - After reading hundreds (yes, literally hundreds) of horrible reviews for Frontier, I was terrified about our family vacation to Florida. There were 8 of us traveling (7 adults/1 child) and everyone had 1 checked bag, and 1 personal item. My sister and her husband also had a car seat and stroller they checked (for free, btw) and a diaper bag for their child (also free.)
24 hours before our flight I checked us in online and printed our boarding passes. I also purchased our luggage online so all we had to do was take our bags to the bag drop. On the day of our travel we got to the airport a few hours early because we wanted extra time going through security with the little one. The agents at the counter who took our bags and checked the stroller and car seat were nice and helpful, nothing like the rude employees most of the reviews mentioned. Our flight to Florida was delayed (less than an hour) because the flight coming in before us was late. It really was no big deal. The seats on the plane were fine. Certainly not luxury seats, but it is a budget airline after all! We all fit comfortably. Our flight there was smooth, and our luggage was on the carousel as soon as we got to it. None of our bags, or other items were lost.
Coming back from Florida we had the same experience. The flight was delayed maybe 30 mins, but we still made it into Cleveland within 10 mins of our scheduled time. We had a super smooth, easy experience with Frontier from beginning to end. Our grand total round trip for 8 of us plus our luggage was $1500. You can't beat that!
As I witnessed some other passengers interactions during my travels, I realized why Frontier has such bad reviews. It's because people just aren't that bright. They don't read instructions or fine print. Yes, Frontier has you pay for your bags, but $25-$30 for a checked bag is still cheaper than other airlines. Also, it says over and over and over on the website to purchase your checked bag in advance to get the best price. It's not rocket science. They also let you bring a personal item for free, and advise you of the size restrictions.
As I stood and watched a couple arguing with an agent at the gate while trying to shove their duffel bag into the measuring box for the personal item, I realized these are the clueless people who complain and write these reviews. They carried on about having to pay $60 for a carry on, and how it's a rip off that the prices "add up." Well yeah, but you could have just used a different bag that fit the personal item size restrictions and it would have been free. Or you could have paid for your carry on in advance and it would have cost only $25. Or you could have listened to them announce 2 times before the flight that you could still purchase your carry on for the cheaper price as long as you do it before boarding. But alas, these charming people decided to ignore all of that, and the girl at the counter still allowed them to take their way oversized personal item for free "this time." So the couple gets off easy and still probably doesn't learn their lesson.
Bottom line- Fontier is not a scam, and they're not sneaky. Everything is clear as day when you buy tickets, and as long as you can read you'll be perfectly fine flying with them!
-Buy your ticket and pay for luggage online.
-Make sure your free item fits the size requirements, (and that your other bags meet the size and weight requirements as well.)
-Check in online 24 hours in advance.
-Get to the airport ahead of time.
That's it! It seems easy enough, but it's absolutely mind blowing how many people are unable to follow such simple instructions. If you need your hand held during the entire process, or if you require luxury accommodations, then Frontier may not be for you. But if you're looking for a budget friendly way to fly, and you can read, Frontier will work for you just fine!
