  • Our family was excited to learn a new choice in grocery shopping would be available soon. Let me first say we are not locals. We moved here this Fall for my partner's acceptance to the university. We have an 8 month old child and we have no car. We originally were going to Country Market and then it closed their doors in September. We were somewhat annoyed they opening closing schedule didn't overlap so we hiked to another County Market some 3 miles away or used the bus. So yesterday was Harvest Market's grand opening and was surprised at the amount of customers that arrived and the sheer number of cars in and out of the parking lot taking most of the other restaurant's spaces. As you walk in you will see to your right the restaurant and coffee shop. A treat to have both there and further inside the bakery. Everything is nicely designed. The first thing you do see when you come in is the fruits and vegetables and there is a fine selection of that. We usually select organic foods and their selection seems adequate. Definitely better than the former County Market. Their selection was anemic. The other Country Market that I mentioned that is about 3 miles away does have a lot better selection and seemingly about the same as Harvest Market. The aisles are all stocked with most of the things we are familiar with, but the one thing I noticed is that the prices are vastly more expensive. Now I'm going to be comparing it to the prices I'm used to in Minneapolis where we are from including the Co-op we shopped in as well as the regular grocery chain "Lunds." I found some of the prices at Harvest Market about $1-$5 higher with some organic and gluten-free items. In general everything was higher. The organic juices are about $1.50 more than our Co-op at home. The only line of products that had a decent price were from "Wild Harvest" which I don't think they are related to the the grocery store in any way other than their name. So at check out I was already expecting it to be a little more than we are used to and sure enough the total came out to be $20-$40 more than we expected. For a large store I was hoping to see a nice discount on our shopping experience, but the prices here are not any different than a Co-op or convenient store prices, but of course a lot more selection. I hope they will see and understand that not all shoppers that come there will be able to afford shopping their regularly and we will have to probably start buying less desirable cheaper food which is not what we wanted for our family. Good well processed food should not be so expensive and stores that carry them should not charge an arm and leg for them. So I'm feeling a little depressed not having a place to shop that has our family and families like ourselves and our budgets in mind.
