  • Starting April 5th 2017, Yorkdale launched "CONCEPT", a retail space located near the TTC subway entrance to showcase local brands in a rotating pop-up style fashion. I went on the launch date and lined up as one of the first 100 customers to receive a free food voucher for every vendor that debuted in the first rounds! There were 6 vendors and I've only tried 4 so far (I'm still holding onto two vouchers which expire in a month): Caplansky's Deli = Lo and behold, the man Zane Caplansky was there himself serving me the most delicious smoked meat I've ever had! The meat was seasoned to near perfection and for a non-spicy eater like me, it paired extremely well with the delicious sweet and tangy honey mustard. Uncle Tetsu = I've had their cheesecakes before but this was my first time trying their new line of cheese tarts. YUM! When fresh out of the oven (or if you take it home and heat it in the oven yourself), the cheesy aromas already win you over. Then, when you take your first bite, a light, warm, fluffy layer of cheesecake just melts in your mouth while the texture is balanced by the sweet and crunchy tart crust. Pie Squared = I came with a friend so we split a steak n cheese + chicken pot pie. Both pies held together well with a perfect consistency that had no filling leaking out. The former had real shredded chunks of steak, but I felt that it wasn't creamy or cheesy enough. The latter was perfectly creamy balanced with refreshingly crunchy vegetables. I would recommend the latter. Nugateau = We split a Matcha yuzu & a Romeo eclair. The former was so unique. The cream filling was so light and creamy and the balance between the rich matcha and the sharp, zesty yuzu was a perfect flavour combination. I personally enjoyed the Romeo because I'm a hazelnut fan but I would agree that it may not be as "special" as the Matcha yuzu because it just tastes like any another creamy, decadent chocolate dessert. I have yet to try Eva's Original Chimney and Nadia's Chocolates, but the chimney cones look outrageously delicious, as I'm sure you've already seen on Instagram.
