| - READ THE SMALL PRINT on your reservation and the card you sign at check in. My colleagues and I had 6 days scheduled to work in Toronto, but needed to check out on the second day. We were informed (by the powerless desk clerk) that we could leave, but we would be charged for all of the days on the reservation. Long story short, even the general manager of the hotel would not budge with this policy. At all levels they were condescending and disinterested in "hospitality."
I have been a business traveler for 25 years, and have checked out early of countless hotels, and have never faced this policy or level of horrendous service. It would have been very easy for them to state their policy, and then graciously remove the extra charges, as a thoughtful level of service. I said to one of the assistant managers that I've stayed at hotels from the Hampton Inn to the Ritz Carlton and have never heard of such a policy, and she said, "well, madame, then you should have stayed there." She said that if they didn't have this policy, their hotel would have been out of business a long time ago.
The lobby is uncomfortable and outdated, the exercise room is nothing like the photos (uncomfortable room with old equipment, so we didn't use it), the rooms are disgusting and worn out, the heat doesn't work, etc.
When we checked out, we were surprised to get an extra $8 "facility" charge each day (plus tax for that charge). We asked what it was, and the desk clerk sheepishly said, for "bottled water in the room, fitness room, and internet." We had no idea we were being charged for this. We had never used the internet or fitness room.
The only good thing about this hotel was the restaurant. While too expensive, the food was excellent and the waiter we dealt with was extremely professional, friendly, efficient.
The Bell Captain was never around when we needed him to get our car, or to help guests through the people begging for money. One evening I had to ask a security guard to escort me to my room, because there were drug addicts in the driveway who followed me to the elevator.
We ended up having to stay in Toronto for the duration of our reservation, because we could not incur the thousands of dollars our work-team would have been charged for leaving early. We had other colleagues who arrived after a few days, and we encouraged them to stay in another hotel. They were very happy at the Marriott on Bloor, and paid less per night than we did at the very awful Metropolitan.
This is a light overview of how awful this hotel is. I hope you are sufficiently deterred from staying here.
