  • From the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh website (carnegiemuseums.org): "Today, we are a collection of four creative, inspiring, thought-provoking places of exploration: Carnegie Museum of Art, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Carnegie Science Center, and The Andy Warhol Museum. We educate young people and attract lifetime learners of all ages. We are the largest, most far-reaching cultural organization in the Pittsburgh region, known throughout the world for our vast art and scientific collections and our scientific research. And we're a community leader in educational outreach." It's been years since I've been to a Carnegie museum, but last Saturday we got a giant dose of old school culture when my parents treated me, my brother, and my boyfriend to a fantastic day at the Carnegie Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. The adult ticket price of $15 (minus $1 when you flash your AAA card; lots of other ticket discount opportunities too) provides access to both museums. These museums take up several square acres, so know that if you want to go through the museums--particularly the massive and information-filled Natural History Museum--in any amount of detail (i.e., you typically read most of the plaques and info that accompanies the different exhibits) you should devote at least a day to your Carnegie adventure. #1 reason to visit the Carnegie Museum of Natural History: The "Dinosaurs in Their Time" exhibit is a must-see for anyone with a beating heart. It's the first exhibit in the world "to feature scientifically accurate, immersive environments spanning the Age of Dinosaurs, arranged chronologically, dynamically posed, and surrounded by the plants and other animals that lived with them." (from carnegiemuseums.org) #1 reason to visit the Carnegie Museum of Art: Go see Claude Monet's Water Lilies with your own eyes. Nothing else really needs to be said regarding that painting, a painting that has called Pittsburgh home for quite a while. I visited the relatively new Carnegie Science Center a few times as a child, and this museum is a popular field trip destination for elementary schools. Located on Pittsburgh's North Shore not far from Heinz Field, the Science Center's grounds cover nearly 200,000 square feet and feature the Buhl Planetarium, IMAX dome (Rangos Omnimax Theater), and numerous exhibits. A really impressive and interactive museum. Can't wait to head to Carnegie's Andy Warhol Museum, which showcases over 4,000 Warhol works in all media. I've always been mesmerized by Warhol's life and art, and my interest really peaked a few months ago when I saw the film Factory Girl. A trip to the Warhol Museum will be on my agenda for my next excursion to the city. The Carnegie Museums are world-class institutions that shouldn't be missed.
