My parents were in town staying the the Pittsburgh Veterans Hospital in Oakland for my dad's upcoming surgery. They wanted to go somewhere close but nice. I knew The Porch would be the spot for us.
Upon arrival we immediately ordered the cornbread. My mom was confused where the butter and jam was that she was used to having with her cornbread and I told her, "Trust me mom, you do not need to add anything to this." My parents loved the cornbread and I soon placed an order for the fried green tomato special. Everyone acted as if they were not going to have any and with one bite they disappeared.
The dinners were also good. My mom and I split a margherita pizza as well as the grilled romaine salad with shrimp. The pizza was good and I appreciate the toppings on the side to add (cheese, red pepper flakes and dried oregano). The grilled romaine salad was also good. The other ordered the pub burger and the pork chop and we were both equally happy with their choices.
We opted to finish the meal with coffee and creme brûlée - this is where I wasn't as thrilled. The creme brûlée was ok. It was super dense, rich and sweet. I've had a lot of creme brûlée but this one was just a bit too much and not quite a balance of favors as I would have liked but not bad.
Also, non food related- the napkins do leave lint so 3 out of the four of us left with lint all over our pants.
Atmosphere was wonderful. The staff was also so nice and accommodating when I asked to be in quiet booth so my dad (hard of hearing) could actually hear me. After dinner we had a nice walk around Schenely Park and it was really great.
We will be back for sure!
