They have some great comedians all the time, and the place looks great with all the lighting and modern furniture. The first time I went, somebody invited me and my girlfriend and we had a blast! The two drink minimum was fine (even though the prices are dramatically raised), For 4 beers the drink total came out to $24 w/out tip.
2nd Visit:
The second time we went out, the comedian was "OK" but really nothing too special. What really ruined it was the loud lady at our table. These were long tables, and she would still overpower what the comedians was saying. I'm not sure if the comedian was bad, or if that lady ruined our night. I couldn't imagine having to sit next to her. These were not just small comments and loud laughter, it was much worse. She was laughing at times that were not appropriate (when nobody else was laughing), and making loud comments to herself like if she and the comedian were the only people in the room. I have absolutely NO IDEA how she didn't get kicked out, or at least get talked to by the staff. Without exaggeration, I think she ruined the show for almost 1/3 of the room. Worst experience I have ever had in any type of show.
3rd Visit:
About a couple of months go by and they call me saying I've won 4 free tickets, I just needed to pay the $2.50 venue charge per ticket (Total of $10). Since we had such a good time the first time, me and my girlfriend decided to give it another shot and invite another couple. We sat in the cool balcony up top, and saw Kirk Fox. I was a little disappointed they didn't have Coors Light anymore, but it really wasn't a big deal. The first 2 opening comedians were good, and Kirk Fox hit the ground running. He was hilarious for the first 1/2 of the show! The second 1/2 was ruined by these 2 girls that decided to have loud conversations throughout the rest of the show like if they were at some hangout place. Of course they're loud and drunk and make me and my girlfriend plus the couple with us lose complete concentration of what the comedian was even talking about. How in the world did this happen...AGAIN. These girls were 5 or 6 chairs away from me and I could STILL hear them! They somehow were talking over the loud speakers and I was forced to hear about their dumb social life. They didn't shut up for a good 30minutes. How were they not asked to be quiet at least once? The couple that came with us agreed that it was what seemed to be a great show until those uninterested girls began to talk loudly over the comedian. Keep in mind that the speakers are really loud, and you have to definitely yell in order for someone else to hear you.
Overall:
It is a safe bet that we probably will not go again to the Tempe Improv until they solve the loudmouth people solution. It is difficult to justify spending AT LEAST a minimum of $30 (assuming the $22 tickets are free) and have a bad time. This is a very simple problem that can easily be fixed. Honestly, I don't mind the extremely expensive drinks at all. I just HATE that there have been loud annoying people talking over the comedian in more than half the shows I went to. The venue is great, it just needs to enforce the "No Talking/No Heckling/No Cell Phone" rule.
