| - My friends and I came here for dinner before seeing a show. We looked at the menu and saw many many things that sounded delicious. It's located inside of Aria. We were passing by and saw the menu. We weren't hungry yet, but we saw that for the paella, it takes 40 to 60 minutes to make from when you order it, so we asked if we could order it now, so that in an hour, it would be ready when we came in for our reservation later. The hostess at the bar said that we could do that (although she tried to tell us to just order in when we sat down and eat tapas in the meantime, so we had to explain that we needed to catch a show). She took a credit card I guess to hold the order.
When we came back, we were seated and we ordered a bunch of tapas to share. Our paella was in the oven and not quite ready yet. We got the chicharonnes, Spanish tortilla, sauteed padron peppers, kale salad, and the spicy bomba. I also got a white sangria. The chicharonnes came in a cute glass jar, but they were HARD as a rock. They are caramelized, but it was so hard to bite into it or chew. I thought I would lose a tooth. We didn't finish these. The tortilla was good, but it was really small. The padron peppers were not what I was expecting. Pimientos de padron are one of my favorite tapas dishes. Usually prepared very simply, sauteed in oil and a little salt. These were covered in orange zest and I thought it took away from the peppers. It tasted good, but I think it would've been better without the orange. The kale salad was good - came with beets - we very much needed some fresh vegetables. The bomba, which is a beef + pork meatball, was yummy. So the tapas we ordered were sort of a mix. And I didn't like my white sangria. I can't remember what fruits were used, but I remember thinking it sounded really yummy. But I could hardly taste any fruitiness, and it didn't really taste like white wine, but just super strong alcohol.
The paella we had "pre-ordered" came out and it was delicious. We got the mixed paella, which lobster, mussels, shrimp, chicken, and chorizo. The rice was cooked perfectly and the shrimp and chicken and chorizo were yummy, as were the veggies (peas and green onions). It came out on the paella pan. The menu says that the paella feeds two people, but I thought it was perfect for four, especially since we also had a bunch of tapas beforehand.
We also ate the slow-cooked crispy roasted suckling pig. This was DELICIOUS!!! One of the most tastiest things I have ever eaten. The skin was indeed crispy - very thin and light, but perfectly crispy. Then there was a layer of fat and then the most tender pork ever. It was AMAZING. We didn't finish this, but we took the leftovers back to our hotel. I ate it later that evening and it still tasted delicious. I'm still dreaming about it.
And then dessert. We were so full at this point, but I had seen that they had churros con chocolate on the menu, and I love churros. These were pretty good too. It came with four loops and a bowl of chocolate to dip the churros in.
For the tapas, I guess I was hoping for the more original simple versions that I ate when I visited Spain. I appreciate the creative artistic twists on the tapas, but I was slightly disappointed by them. But the suckling pig and the paella were amazing here - AMAZING!!!
