| - I flew from Atlanta to Toronto (9/1/2017) and back to Atlanta from Toronto (9/5/2017). However, both flights went through Toronto's Pearson Airport instead of Billy Bishop Airport. Though my trip was for September, I paid for my round trip ticket in early May. The total ticket price was $524.74. I only carried one suitcase. The first piece of luggage costs $25 and if you have a second piece, it costs you $35.
I have to say that my overall experienced was mixed. Going from Atlanta to Toronto was fine but coming back was a bit stressful. It was my first time traveling outside of the United States so I was already nervous and didn't know what to expect.
At Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport, I was pleased with how the process went. The line wasn't very long and the people at the counter were as professional as they come. They were pleasant and helped me with everything. This was a shock because Hartsfield is usually chaotic when I travel on other airlines. With the exception of the flight being delayed for about 20 minutes, everything was perfect. I left Atlanta relaxed and calm. The seats on the plane were comfortable, the leg room was acceptable, and one of the airline attendants looked like actress Olivia Munn. The attendants spoke both French and English. They were attentive to everyone's needs without being annoying. Getting off the plane in Toronto was just as pleasant. It didn't take long to get my luggage and I was relieved to find a currency exchange right there for my convenience.
The part of Air Canada that brings my rating down to 3 stars is how disorganized everything was when it was time for me to catch my return flight home. Canada has some of the nicest people you'll ever want to meet but this wasn't the case at Pearson Airport when I was trying to head back to the States. It was like they were thinking, "His vacation is over, we have his money now, so let's take our pound of flesh out of this American." Never mind that I'm one of the good ones who isn't mean to anyone. I asked a question about where I'm supposed to go and this stern, middle aged woman with short blonde hair raises her voice and says, "Over there! Over there!" gesturing like I'm a child. And the whole process was pretty much self-serve, including the part where I put my luggage on the belt. I couldn't get the luggage belt thing to move and ended up having to get another Air Canada employee to assist me after he helped other customers who were having the same problem. He acted as if we were getting on his nerves when all we were trying to do was ensure our luggage would be properly checked in.
Once I got on the plane things were just as fine as they'd been on the flight going to Toronto. All the customer service on the plane both going there and coming back was flawless. If they would make the part where you're leaving Pearson Airport to return to the USA more convenient, Air Canada has the potential to earn a 4 or 5 rating.
One thing I learned when exchanging currency from Canadian to American dollars: Once you get back to the USA, they only exchange the currency that is in dollars and won't exchange the coins that are less than a dollar. That's not Air Canada's fault though. Just a helpful bit of information, as I'm stuck with a little souvenir Canadian coin change. Lessons of a first time international traveler learned.
