  • I go to school downtown and I need a mid-day coffee fix at least two or three times per week. Cartel is conveniently located a block away from my school, so it would seem to be a good choice. I will give them credit where credit is due... the vanilla nonfat latte was pretty good. I would definitely order it again if I were to go back. But I will absolutely not be going back. In fact, let me preface this comment by saying that I have actually never written a yelp review before, but my experience at Cartel was so horrible, that I decided to open an account to share my opinion about this place with others. I have never encountered such appallingly rude and just downright nasty barristas. I went in with a few friends from class and we all left feeling similarly disrespected. The girl who took our orders had long dark hair and was super skinny... What is her deal?? Did your dog just die or something? Would it kill you to show even a hint or smile or to just pretend to be deriving some pleasure from working at Cartel? After my friends and I got our drinks, we hung out for a little while and talked, but when it was time to head back to class, one of my friends had not finished her drink yet, so she asked a barrista for a to-go cup. After asking, the barrista looked at her and essentially rolled her eyes, appalled that someone would ask her to do such a demanding and burdensome task. I have worked in a restaurant. I know what it is like to work in this type of industry. I am always respectful of servers and people who take my orders, and I will give them very hefty tips if I feel like they are genuine and if they are doing their best to take care of me. However, when people are as disrespectful as these young ladies, it makes me not want to go back to that establishment and give them my money. These two girls were so incredibly impolite, unwelcoming, and unpleasant (agreed upon by the other three ladies I was with and myself) that I will not be going back to Cartel. If you're downtown and you want great drinks and pastries, accompanied by fantastic service, go to One Coffee at Washington and Central. The staff that works there is phenomenal and they're always happy and eager to help. Polar opposites from the girls I encountered at Cartel.
