  • I spoke to Laura once on the phone and a couple times via text. I have 4 kids that need lessons and we had just had a really bad experience with a previous swim teacher. So, understandably we were going to be more cautious when hiring our next one. Private swim lessons for this many children is not cheap so before I dropped several hundred dollars this time I wanted to be a bit more thorough in my screening process. I asked her for references. She said she does not give out other client information. I was not asking for her to give me her clients information without consulting them first. I would never expect that. In fact I would prefer her to give them my contact information. If she is confident in her abilities and know her references would be complimentary then the normal response to that should have been" I would be happy to contact a couple of previous customers to see if they would be willing to talk to you about their experience". However, she just never responded to me again and its been over a week. Asking for references is a common practice. Especially when a lot of money is involved. There is a reason every employer ask their new hires for references. I think there would be a lot less bad reviews and unhappy customers if everyone just did their homework before hiring some one. If I plan to spend a lot of money whether it be for the house , my kids, surgery, etc. I have always checked references and no one has ever had a problem with that. I had a very risky jaw surgery and it was my second time so I was obviously nervous and wanted to talk to a couple patients that have had the same surgery I was doing. My doctor offered it before I even asked him. Again, if you are confident in our abilities there should not be a problem with letting me talk to a happy client. On the rare occasion, I have had people drag their feet or make excuses not to give me references and I have chosen not do business with them. To me, that's a red flag. Update: I see Laura herself or a few friends of hers tried to do damage control after my post with the "positive" reviews. So obvious! Where were these "happy clients" when I asked her for references? She can get 2 people to instantly post a positive review on yelp to counter balance my honest review but she somehow can not find a happy client for me to talk to in over a week. I wish she would just be honest and say that she just flat out did not want to go through the hassle or whatever the reason was rather than straight up lying and saying she was trying to find someone for me to talk to. She had absolutely no intentions of ever calling me back. She said she does not give out client information ....I responded and told her I did not expect that but asked her to give them my information in hopes to talk to someone she has taught .....I got ZERO response. Swim instructors are a dime a dozen. Do your homework!!!
