| - (I'm confused about the below reviews as one is referencing this gym as the Bloor/Yorkville location while others are writing about the former Goodlife in the Eaton Centre. Maybe the address on this Yelp page used to be incorrect? Anyway, I'm writing about the 483 Bay / Bell Trinity Square location here... )
I've tried about five or six Goodlifes in the downtown core and this one is by far my least favourite. I've visited at peak hours and also on a dead Sunday, and each time I've left a bit frustrated, wishing I had gone to another location instead. (The curse of chain gyms - spoiled for choice!)
- The entrance is a bit confusing and hard to find. You walk down the stairs as if you're going into a dungeon. And then have to go upstairs right after a workout! Ouch if it's leg day!!
- The staff are not as friendly here as at other closely-located Goodlifes. This isn't really a big deal, as it's just a gym and I go to workout alone and don't participate in group classes or personal training, but if the staff at three other close-by Goodlifes make the effort to be friendly and say hello and goodbye every time, why can't the staff here do the same? A bit annoying.
- The layout is awful. The stretching area is tiny and the weight machines are so closely-squeezed together that you literally run the risk of hitting somebody every time you participate in a limb extension of any kind. I've seen people write about gyms a lot, saying ''it's so small you can hit someone easily!!'', but here, that's actually 100% true. Add to this the prime location of the gym (close to Eaton Centre, City Hall and all the Bay St offices) and all the inevitable crowds fighting for space, you have a complete disaster.
- My biggest gripe is that it seems this layout disaster could easily have been avoided. Now, I'm no architect, but there's a huge amount of space at and behind the front desk that surely could have been put to better use when designing the gym. Similarly, the women's changing rooms seem to be about 1/3 of the size of the entire gym floor!! Why the need for so many lockers??? It's bizarre entering the mansion-sized changing rooms and then going out onto the cramped, crowded gym floor. I'd love to take a bulldozer to the changing rooms and spread out the machines and free weights back into the extra space. This location should look at the Scotia Plaza Goodlife to see how to effectively make use of a small floorplan.
- The changing rooms themselves are irritating. The showers are difficult to use and the water pressure is terrible. There's a sign in the women's changing room banning the use of hairspray and spray deodorants for fear of triggering the allergies of some members. Give me a break! I'd love to know what the early-morning Bay Street crowd think about this, going to work deodorantless after a sweaty workout!
- This is nitpicky, but the TVs at this gym seem more reliant than most other locations in showing the Goodlife Propaganda channel on every television.
To the gym's credit, it's clean and well-maintained. It's probably not the worst Goodlife out there, but in my experience it's sub-par compared to the many other competitors in the downtown core.
