I've had tons of items powder coated by countless shops in my time...some good, some bad, some so-so. Nothing you can ever count on though. The sad part of the powder coating business is that most of what you get will be industrial, production-type work. This means it's some putz that just doesn't give a damn about the quality, and is hurrying up with your stuff so he can go to lunch soon. This means the blasting preparation is marginal, as well as the spray job. This also means that if you have imperfections, they get pretty damn pissed off if you say something, and act like you are crazy for taking notice. It's basically a crapshoot and you have to take what you can get. Trying to do something in a high gloss with a mirror finish??? Forget it!!!
Enter Snail Motorsports. First off Juan is a smart guy, just in general. This plays a BIG part in the big picture here. He understands how things work, and also comprehends that you might actually require the stuff that you're getting coated to function when you are done. There is nothing worse than having a smooth, machined surface sandblasted or marred after you specifically tell the monkeys NOT to damage that area or else the part is ruined. Sometimes they'll do the truly amazing and coat half that surface and leave a nice jagged powder edge along your critical surface...that's always a great day in the neighborhood...NOT! Same for threaded or other critical fitment areas. And that doesn't mean to leave a 1/4" gap away from those areas either, which makes your stuff look like absolute crap once it's put back together. Again, we need some upper echelon thinking here to do this stuff, not a brain dead drone who's going to be fired in the next week or two for being stupid, drunk, or high.
Also note that this process pretty much is going to cost double whatever a GOOD paint job is (don't compare this to some hokey rattle can cost either). That's just how it is, there's no magic discount wand that appears if you whine or complain enough. Quality powder coating is not for bargain hunters by any means. If anyone tells you otherwise, then they have shit for brains and are probably one of those know-nothings that LOVES to dispense information to anyone within earshot of their soapbox. I KICK YOUR SOAPBOX OUT FROM UNDER YOU AND SPIT ON YOUR BROKEN LEG!!!! *spit* *spit* (As you can tell I absolutely hate spreaders of ignorance and misinformation!)
In any case, back to the good... Because he knows that you are going the extra mile to powder coat rather than paint, Juan actually respects that fact and always makes sure to do a stupendous job. Not a good job, but a STUPENDOUS one. This is no exaggeration. Delivery time variability? Well in a small shop that is growing, you can't do much about that but I've never had a delay that was unreasonable. Nope. If you think it's taking too long, here's a great hint: As with ANY independent shop that is REALLY good at something, and this place is no exception...if you complain like an asshole you should just go away and never come back. Seriously. I'm not kidding. All you are is interference fodder for the good customers who are already patiently waiting their turn. (And trust me, there are more than enough of us, and there always will be). If you have the "I'll go somewhere else if you don't serve me" attitude then you should definitely go somewhere else. And definitely tell your friends like you not to come either, since they are probably just like you. Let the door hit and trip you on the way out too!!
People who are good at something and start a business doing it are not doing it to serve your whiny ass. They are doing it because they like it, are good at it, and this ability happens to be something they can do to fulfill a need out there and make someone else happy. It's the ultimate equilibrium in a happy world. If you become a dick they will become burned out and we will all lose something valuable. And trust me, Snail Motorsports is something NOT common and is VERY VALUABLE. I live in SoCal and with the tons of coaters out here and years of giving everyone out here a shot, I still send my stuff all the way to Vegas to get coated...that's how amazing this guy's work is. DON'T UPSET THE EQUILIBRIUM!
If you don't want to ship, you can always drive to Vegas to drop off and pick up...don't let me twist your arm ;)
