  • I'm a big fan of Baz Luhrmann, so naturally, I had high hopes for this show. It's a huge production with half a dozen lead singers, elaborate costumes, and well-choreographed dance routines. It would be a massive understatement to say the show is ambitious. To retell Moulin Rouge, The Great Gatsy, and Romeo + Juliet in an hour and a half show? Yikes. But all things considered, BAZ Star Crossed Love does an admirable job. Some specific criticism: I absolutely love (El Tango De) Roxanne from Moulin Rouge, but this show's version is awful. High-pitched and nasally? WTF. It inspires instant hate and does injustice to both Baz's version and Police's. I would much rather have had William Thomas Evans (Zidler) take a shot at the song. I also didn't enjoy the intertwined duet from different songs. It just didn't work for me. I highly recommend seeing the movies beforehand. Keeping up with three plot lines during the show is certainly confusing, even for someone who has seen all of the movies. Some specific praise: Joanna Jones is absolutely amazing. Her voice is mesmorizing, and if I had to choose one vocal to listen to outside of this show, it would be hers. Briana Cuoco makes a magnificent Satine. Believable, beautiful, and talented. Honestly, the female vocals are strong across the board. The stage is beautiful yet feels intimate. Compared to the show's previous home (Light Nightclub at Mandalay Bay), The Palazzo feels much richer and exudes grandeur. I guess that's what happens when a stage is built for a show. I particularly love how the show comes into the audience. Side note: Lisa Marie Smith was one of the best parts of Pin Up at Stratosphere, so I was pleasantly surprised to see her in BAZ. It's a good show with a few problems. Fix a few songs, and this would be a favorite. Oh, and one more tip: pee before you head in because the show happens all through the aisles, and peeing in the aisles is frowned upon.
