| - I've been to Coca Cafe for brunch several times and love it each time. Yes, the wait can be horrendous on the weekends (that's kind of the thing with brunch). I get that service can be rushed on weekends too, but haven't experienced too much trouble with brunch before. I think that the thing to do with brunch foods is not to go with your typical brunch fare like omelettes, but to get their more adventurous foods. I've always been happy with the hash, the pancakes, and other interesting, innovative dishes that they have.
But the real reason that I wanted to write this review was because I finally tried their dinner. I have been walking by for months thinking that I should really go for dinner, but always think about Coca as a brunch spot. One night my husband and I had a bottle of wine in tow to grab dinner at Picollo, but there was a wait for Picollo and I was starving. We decided to go with Coca since we had never tried their dinner and there was no wait.
Well, I can't believe I waited so long to try their dinner. This was phenomenal. First, the corkage fee was minimal, which I always appreciate. We started with the charcuterie plate, which was fantastic for the most part. I'm not a huge pate fan and this was no exception, but the other meats and cheeses were great. My husband ordered the miso cod with black rice and fried Japanese okra and I ordered the BBQ duck with scallion pancakes and salad. Both were amazing! Seriously, some of the better food that I've had in quite awhile. The duck was cooked perfectly, which is hard to do (and I"m not even an huge duck fan). The scallion pancakes had a little too much batter in my opinion, but were still quite tasty. And the salad was excellent. The cod was phenomenal, truly the star of the meal. I think that it was even better than the black miso cod at Soba, which is saying something. The black rice was excellent, nutty and interesting flavored, and the fried okra was perfect (not too much batter). We saved room for a lemon cake with rhubarb compote and lemon curd, which was fantastic. It was a hot night otherwise I would have tried the doughnuts with salted caramel sauce, as those were tempting me from afar. All of this food was reasonably priced, with the whole meal coming to ~$50. Not bad for a tasty night out and leaving feeling full on great food!
The service was very nice, if not a bit odd. The two waitresses seemed to both be serving us and weren't always communicating. But that turned into more attention rather than less, so I was happy. And they were both quite nice without being invasive, so another bonus point. They may want to communicate a bit more about service, but no complaints over here.
All in all, don't forget about Coca for dinner. Brunch is great but I think they really get to flex their muscles in the dinner menu.
