  • I am writing about the store in Ogden, Calgary. I live about five minutes away from this store so over the years I always donated my unwanted stuff there. From time to time I also go there shopping. However, I noticed in recent years their prices are no longer a bargain. The last time I was there just before the Christmas, I bought a cute ceramic jar a shape of an egg and a little chicken poke her head out of the egg, and that is the cover. It cost $5. I also bought six glass jars in different shape and size at $3 each. I asked the clerk to wrap the egg jar carefully. However, she said they ran out of old newspapers so she just used two plastic bags for the jar. She also used two plastic bags for my other glass jars without any wrapping paper. It took me five minutes to drive home. When I got home, I found the egg jar was already broken. I felt I didn't have a reason to return it because after all, it was broken in my car. My friend pointed out that the jar broke was because it was not wrapped up properly. Still, I didn't go back. A week later I was in the dollar store and found that they sell brand new glass jars at $2.50 each. These jars are about the same size of the biggest jar I got from the Salvation Army's store. I went home, wrapped up the six jars and went back to the Salvation Army store, only to be told they don't have a return policy on these items. I was reluctant to put a negative review here for one reason: Salvation Army is there to help the poor, until my friend pointed out that by over charge the poor and with no refund policy, is this really help the poor? Don't forget they got all their stuff for free while the dollar stores have to buy their supplies. I also remembered that years ago I learned that consumer law said in Alberta every merchant had to have a refund policy and the minimum time period is 14 days. So not only they over charged their poor customers, they are not operating according to the law. So the moral of the story: check out the dollar store before you buy anything in Salvation Army store or any 2nd hand stores. S.
