  • After reading an article about Forte in the newspaper, I checked the Yelp reviews. Buoyed by those, mostly favorable, from my Yelp peeps, we had a go at it last night. All I can say is "Cada uno a su gusto," or for you gringos, to each his own. My husband rated this a grudging two stars. But I'm the reviewer, and I take his ratings solely under advisement. My extra star is for the beautiful crockery and matching salt and pepper shakers, all available for purchase near the front. No need to tell your mom the restaurant "gifted" you. We arrived a little before 9 p.m., saw the sign "Wait to be seated," so we waited. And waited some more, until finally a server appeared an offered our choice of tables in the nearly-empty dining room. The cocktail menu was lengthy, but perplexingly, only one single item had a price. I didn't order it, but what made that one special? Instead, I had a glass of sangria, described as fruity, and with the addition of Armagnac. I like it when sangria is kicked up with more than just wine. In this case, the fruit consisted of a slice of lemon. There was no sweetness whatsoever, and the brandy was undetectable. In short, it was a mere glass of red wine. And I don't drink red wine, unless it's sangria, which this wasn't. The confusion continued. I had seen the Yelp photos. The heralded Thracian Clay Pot was not listed under the tapas menu, so I assumed that it would be a dish that we could share. We wanted it without the sausage, and our server said she preferred it that way. We also shared an order of Varenicki. The Varenicki looked like a very small portion, but I suppose it was adequate, since there turned out to be eight of them. They were pretty tasty. But when the server presented the clay pot, we were gobsmacked by the itty-bitty size. I couldn't tell from the pictures that it was going to be so small. She told us to be careful, that when we got to the middle it would be very spicy. It didn't take much to find the single hot pepper; I like spicy, but not the seeds that scorch my esophagus, so after I removed it the dish had no spice at all. None. The combination of the tomatoes, pepper, and egg was decent, but nothing I would rave about. I've made this at home a million times, though in my skillet instead of a pretty clay pot. We probably should have realized from the price that it was not going to be a main course. We would have, if the menu hadn't been so confusing, and if our server had given us a heads-up. After that less-than-Dionysian feast, we could have ordered more. But after the long initial wait, the disappointment with the sangria and the clay pot, and the fact that the kitchen was about to close, we determined that the holes in our stomach would be better filled with a trip to Yogurtland, and we parted ways with the charmingly decorated, but unfulfilling Forte.
