  • Add Sonoma Grill to the list of quality, dining options in downtown Pittsburgh. I made reservations (strongly recommended) for a late dinner and we arrived early, hoping to get a table sooner. No dice, so we fought for drinks at the very crowded bar, where wine is definitely their specialty. Even with a number of bartenders the service was spotty and I couldn't get a clear answer if we needed to settle up before eventually heading to our table. (In the end, they combined our bar and dinner tabs.) However, once we were seated the quality of service rose dramatically. Our waitress was so personable and informative with the dinner specials and her recommendations. Once she described how the "Free Range Venison from New Zealand is so tender it melts in your mouth" I was sold. But first, we decided to start with one of her appetizer recommendations, the Scratch Gnudi, delicious ricotta dumplings that didn't last long, even with six of them to share. Once our meals arrived, I realized the venison was actually shoulder chops and not a filet, like I thought. My mistake for not reading the description closely. Although it was tender and tasted great, there just wasn't enough of it to compliment the risotto and carrots to fill me up. However, we solved that problem with a shared order of Espresso Crème Brûlée served with a small scoop of Salted Caramel ice cream, a delicious and wonderful finale to a satisfying, but pricey, Saturday evening.
