  • When comparing dollar stores, Dollarama is king in my books! One thing that really makes Dollarama standout from its competitors are the great brands they carry. Most dollar stores have these cheap no name brands you've never heard of whereas Dollarama carries some big names like Colgate, Nivea, Ivory, Cadbury, Crayola, Nestle, Kraft, Panasonic and Heinz just to name a few! Because of the brands Dollarama carries you might expect them to charge premiums as other dollar stores do, but they don't! At Dollarama nothing costs more than $3! I've been to dollar stores where they have $5 items, $10 items and even items costing more than $20! Those kinds of price points are well beyond what you'd expect for a dollar store. Some might say that anything above $1 is above expectation as well, but the majority of the items at Dollarama are still only $1. The climb up to $3 has been gradual and based on positive consumer response; they introduced $2 items in 2009 and it wasn't until 2012 when they introduced $2.50 and $3 items. With this multi-price point approach their inventory has grown noticeably as it's allowed them to acquire inventory from more sources, including closeout sales. So before you complain about items costing more than $1 shop around and see if you can do better, I doubt you'll find HDMI cables and phone chargers for the latest devices that cost less than $2-3! Dollarama feels like a mini-department store because they have items in all categories from toys, to food, to automotive, to household and much more. It's fair to say that the quality isn't great for a lot of items, but at the same time it's not that bad for what you're paying as well. If you're a smart shopper you can do really well and save yourself a lot of money by doing some of your regular shopping here before heading to a more conventional category retailor or department store. Another thing they really do a good job on is there seasonal items, these are constantly changing and typically fill an aisle or two. Definitely worth checking out every month or two. In speaking specifically to the Macleod Plaza location, it's a solid store. It shares a parking lot with multiple businesses but finding parking is never too difficult. The store is well kept and organized, other locations I've been to have boxes and stock lying around everywhere. The staff are polite and efficient. Also all Dollaramas accept debit payments, no credit.
