| - Update (4/22/07): So I know I said I'd never be back cos my first experience here was pretty bad, but Boyfriend's Japanese class gets together once in a while, and they decided to go here. I was dreading it at first, but I am extremely glad we went cos this time, everything was just so much better. I'm not sure if it was because we went during full-price hours or if it was because we were with a large group, or maybe they just decided to be nice that day. I can't really say. One thing's for sure, though...I was glad for the change.
I'm kind of at awe at how different the two experiences I had there were. The food was sooo much better! The meat actually had some flavor, and that disgusting garlic oil crap from last time was actually a pleasant dipping sauce this time. Even the little side dishes were better! And the salad was just as good.
The service was also loads better. They actually took care of us! I feel like that's pretty darn important when eating out. Our waiter was extremely patient with the ordering process, since it always takes a while to decide how the ordering and sharing goes down in big groups. They filled our water cups, they flipped the meat for us, and they actually cut the big mushrooms that come with it, which we definitely noticed since it was impossible to eat those the first time.
Two bad things from this trip: chopsticks and bathroom. This place should definitely invest in some better chopsticks because trying to eat with these sharp-edged-blocked chopsticks was painful. The whole all-black thing with their bathrooms might be cool (or creepy) since it kind of reminded me of Magneto, but one toilet was backed up and the other had pee (or some other liquid, since all I saw was black) all over the seat and ground. Ew. But I guess that's more the fault of stupid customers, eh? I'm sure it'll be cleaned up by the end of the day... =\
Despite those two things, it was really a great experience this time around. I wish I could give it more stars, but I'll just say this is an average of the two times I've been.
---------------------------------------------
I can't say I've been to many Korean barbecue places, but I do know I enjoyed every single one until I came to this one. Perhaps we just didn't know how or what to order. But I feel like that should never be much of a problem with restaurants. Even if it's not the favorite item that everyone orders, it should still be somewhat good.
So we ordered some beef that was extremely bland. It was also pretty fatty and came with a sort of garlic oil dipping sauce that just made it even more fatty. I still had the icky taste of the oil in my mouth the next morning even after some good brushing, flossing, and rinsing. The glass noodle dish that we got after was pretty good. It was definitely the better of the two. I didn't care much for all the little side dishes, but the beef one and the kimchi were pretty good. The salad that came with everything was good as well. It just sucks that the main 'bbq' part of our meal was the worst.
The place looks nice inside, and it's pretty spacious with comfortable booths. The service was nice when it came, although it was pretty sporadic. I think the prices are comparable to other Korean places, but the place did kind of redeem itself with it's 20% off happy hour from 11pm-8am. (They're open 24 hours.) I hear it used to be 50% off when they first opened, and you'll only find me back there if they fall back to that.
