| - My boyfriend and I have done close to 60 escape rooms but had never tried this place before due to various reasons - I haven't heard a lot of positive reviews, I never see them offer any discounts, they charge a $2 per person booking fee, to name a few. But we are escape room enthusiasts and are running out of local places so we decided to throw caution to the wind and give it a shot.
We did their 80's themed Rec Room. It started out ok but then the puzzles seemed to make less sense as you progressed thru the room. Also, this is the first placed we've ever encountered that told us we can use our phones because it might be beneficial to search Google to help us on some things. I questioned that because escape rooms are supposed to be designed to where no outside knowledge is needed and our game master said it isn't needed but could be helpful. Fast forward to where in the room you might use your phone - without saying too much, there are trivia questions about events in the 80's. You either know it or you don't. If you don't, then you're either guessing and wasting time until you guess them all correctly or you're googling the answer. This is stupid, imo. All of the information needed to solve the room should be available somewhere in the room.
The main reason our experience got only two stars though is because of how they do their clues. Their clues are based on progression. For those that don't know what that means, it basically means you get a clue based on your progression and when your game master feels you should get one. You do not get to decide when you get a clue and, instead, are at their mercy. So it's quite possible that you could be stuck on something and you are literally just standing around waiting (wasting) 10 minutes until your game master decides to throw you a bone. I don't understand this approach. The players should get to decide when they want a clue. Most places give you three free clues and it's up to you to decide when it'd be best to use them. If you use them all up within the first 20 minutes well, then, that's on you. But if we're moving thru the room quickly without help and then get stuck towards the end on something, we shouldn't be forced to wait 10 minutes before getting a clue because someone else created some kind of algorithm that tells them this clue shouldn't be given until a certain amount of time has passed. I don't understand that. It takes the control of the game out of the player's hands. It doesn't make for a positive, fun experience. I wish someone would've told us beforehand how they do their clues here because, had we known, we wouldn't have come. Because of that, their non-competitive prices/fees and their unwillingness to offer any discounts, we will not be back to try their other rooms. We didn't enjoy our experience here at all.
