| - Just had a group dinner at Donovan's and since it was my friend's gift to us all, we sampled half the appetizers and ended with the chef's special desert for all. All dozen of us were picked up in Donovan's shuttle and this is a great way to go if you have a group this size. The room they sat us in is a perfect fit for 12, and one side of this private room is glass paneled showing all the wine from floor to ceiling. A very, very extensive (expensive) wine selection if that's your thing.
Me, I like beer... cuz I get thirsty and wine and water don't do it for me. But Donovan's has a poor beer selection. Nothing on tap, which suits me fine from all I know about tapping beer, but how come you can't have a decent selection of cold beer, especially since they do have a bar area? Not enough fridge space?
I had the special Kansas City cut, bone in, 20oz... enough left over for a couple steak sandwiches, with baby carrots and peas, and I chose the garlic smashed potatoes. My medium steak was very tender, just a bit dry, but great flavor. The veggies and one choice of side (the skillet fried potato slices include a sauce that goes well with your meat) come with all entrees.
And, during the summer it doesn't seem they press the 'dress code'. In sum, a great place for a special occasion. High level of service. But poor beer selection and the high entree prices (20oz porterhouse $55, 12oz NY strip $45) take away a star for me. If you're on the west side of Phoenix, try Skye.
