  • My wife and I had to stop by 99 Ranch Market to pick up food for some recipes and wanted to grab a bite to eat afterwards. The criteria we used to make our choice is that we window shopped every restaurant on both levels of the Chinatown Plaza and whichever food looked best, we would stop in. We gazed in at a family of four dining through the window at Sam Woo like they were a puppy we interested in buying at the pet shop and it looked appetizing enough for us. We had no wait to be seated on a Saturday night at 8 PM with the restaurant around 25 percent full. I didn't see the 350+ review, 2-star rating until after I checked in while we were sipping on some hot tea. So I told my wife we better play it safe for our order. We split the 3 item BBQ combination with chicken, roasted duck, and subbed roasted pork ($1) for BBQ pork ($17.95) and a bowl of wonton noodle soup ($8.25). I was actually very pleased with the combo. The meat wasn't overcooked topped with a vinegar based sauce with a herb aroma that I couldn't figure out. The meat went well with an order of steamed rice. My wife had the majority of the soup, which she was happy with, but had a strange odor to me. Service that night was typical of many Chinatown restaurants: greeted, seated, menus dropped off with no other greeting, come back 5 minutes later to take entire order, food is dropped off, maybe see the waiter again, and pay up front. The menu is very large with items numbering into the 200s. You can also take your order to go by ordering at the take out area up front. All in all, our meal wasn't miserable, but I'm not sure I would come back.
