  • I want Fat Sandwich to be better than it is. The problem might be mine. It's drunk food and I'm eating it sober. I go back because sometimes, after a stressful morning, I just want something unhealthy and tasty. Fat Sandwich delivers on those two criteria. However, let's talk about flavor. Most of the flavor at Fat Sandwich is coming from full-on grease rather than from fresh, flavorful ingredients or balanced seasoning. I haven't had an extreme sandwich there, although those are on the menu (piled high with multiple meats, fried foods, cheese, and sauce), but I recently had a cheeseburger. Cheeseburgers come with two patties automatically, cheese, and a grilled bun. The first few bites were tasty. The bun was lightly crisped and the beef had a good sear. The (American?) cheese was standard -- mild but able to stand up to the beef. Toward the middle of the burger, it started tasting -- suspiciously, strangely -- like a chili dog (I ordered it plain, so there were no condiments or veggies). Maybe there was some residue on the grill. I dunno. I finished it anyway. As for atmosphere, Fat Sandwich is kind of a hole in the wall. It's not that clean, the decor is dingy and depressing, the guys at the counter have multiple facial piercings (not that there's anything wrong with that), and smoky grease hangs in the air. The place attracts and serves mostly men. I've yet to see another woman there, although I imagine one or two might brave it once every full moon like I do. As a woman I definitely feel the odd man out standing around to wait for my sandwich, but I've never been treated badly by anyone there, customers, cashiers, or cooks. I will say this about the staff -- they really seem to care about doing a good job. A delivery order had gotten messed up and they were working hard to fix it, discussing how the order went wrong. The guy who turned out to be responsible felt bad about it. The place at the time was bumping with lunch customers and they kept turning out orders, too.
