  • Ten years ago when I used to live in the immediate area, I used to visit Lone Mountain a lot. It seemed a little more remote back in the day. Urban sprawl has now enveloped it but no worries the reward at the top is still worthy and incredible. LM reminds me of the mountain in Schwarzenegger's 80's flick "Total Recall" which contained the alien ruins. SInce returning to the area, I have been haunted by the thought of summiting it's phenomenal peak once more. I set off at the beginning of morning nautical twilight with a goal of summiting at sunrise. I parked at the end the north end of Vegas Vista and found only one other vehicle in the area. I grabbed my day pack and a water bottle and off I went. I made up into the saddle where the bench lays in short order. The wind was howling and thus I pulled my wind breaker and put it on. The bench as I recall was an Eagle Scout project but the plaque dedicating the achievement seems to have been ripped off by vandals. Other destroyers of property have marked the bench with stoner graffiti. But as a testament to it's original construction by those industrious Boy Scouts, despite attempts to further damage it, it's still there and capable of supporting even my body weight. Up I continued towards what I found to be a false peak and caught my breath in the chilled morning air, drank some water and witnessed the Sun as it began to pop over Sunrise Mountain. As I approached the summit, I came across the owner of the only vehicle in Vegas Vista area coming heading down. Upon arrival at the top, I silently remembered when I used to bring my German Shepard, Conan up here with me. After that I recorded a birthday message for the boy, and then marveled at the view and how things have and have not changed, then I checked into yelp. The route back to your ride is easy, there is no slippery shale and on this morning adventure, I made the trek in tennis shoes. The climb is super simple and a blessing for those wanting to sort of escape the valley via some altitude but without having to burn gas to do it. LM is a hybrid of experiencing nature and a stair master. The difference being is that instead of slaving in a temperature controlled, fitness sweat lodge, at LM you get to experience an outstanding view of the Vegas valley. On my egress down I encountered other climbers with the majority of them having no water. BRING WATER. if you don't bring anything else......BRING WATER!
