| - 5 star experience from start to finish. There is literally nothing bad at all that I can say about my first tattoo appointment at Studio 21. Read on for the deets, yo.
I went to Studio 21 about three weeks ago as a walk-in for a quick consultation and to schedule an appointment. From the moment I opened the door, I felt very comfortable. The front area is clean with a lot of stuff, but organized and not overwhelming. There are so many neat, weird, awesome pieces of art to look at. I was impressed how the space was set up. Anyway, I waited a few minutes for the people in front of me to finish their transaction, but I was acknowledged at least, which is very important to me because if I don't get acknowledgment I tend to feel super awkward and it reads a bit rude to me. So, points! After a little while of sitting on their comfy couch, the front desk guy(I cannot remember his name. Damn me!) called me over and we discussed my idea. He was very approachable, funny, and social. Perfect person to have running the counter to represent the studio.
After a few minutes of discussion about the size, placement, and potential cost of the piece, he called over an available artist that could speak with me to discuss my idea further. I met with Mike Biggs, who understood my concept right away and who I felt comfortable could do my idea justice, so I booked my appointment. They ask for a $50 deposit, which can be used towards your appointment at the completion of your piece or you can let it roll to another appointment if it's within a year's time.
Before I get into my take on my appointment, I will say I was happy that this place sent out confirmation and appointment reminders(in which you have to confirm your appointment by pressing a button) via email.
So, I returned yesterday for my scheduled appointment and was greeted by a nice lady at the front counter, who was pleasant and made me feel like I had, again, made the right choice. I filled out some paperwork(1 page of initialing statements) and my ID was scanned. Then I waited a few minutes and Mike came out to greet me with a drawing of the idea we discussed. I asked to adjust the size and the font and he was happy to do so. Off he went and when he came back it was exactly what I wanted. To the tattoo room, Batman!
Mike is an artist who is dedicated to his craft and to making sure his client is happy. We put the outline on twice because the first time was a bit off, in terms of it being straight and he wasn't bothered at all by having to do something twice. He was committed to making sure everything was done right and thoroughly, which I really appreciate. The actual tattoo went so quickly and I eased up after a few minutes of initial nerves. Mike's tattoo room is filled with lots of rad wall art(some for sale) and little strange curiosities for me to admire as I looked around. Mike is efficient and precise with his work and made me feel at ease by being low-key funny and asking if I was okay, but also letting the time pass without too much chatter so I could zone out and listen to music. Overall, one of the best tattoo experiences I have ever had.
I would definitely recommend Studio 21. The ease of getting myself booked for an appointment combined with the overall friendliness of the staff is worth it alone. There is a lot of talent at this shop to choose from and I'll definitely be back to see Mike for my next tattoo.
Advice: Don't come here trying to be cheap or trying to bargain the price of a tattoo. That's lame. I'm certainly not grabbing bills off the money tree I planted, but I recognize that tattoos are pricey and save accordingly. Don't be a douche canoe. End.
