| - A walk in The MGM Grand, the City of Entertainment is a magical ride on a carpet that reaches attractions including a world renown night club, bars, restaurants, a colossal casino, and the Hollywood Theatre. A few days ago I enjoyed a 90 minute magic carpet ride in the Hollyood Theatre watching the living legend of Magic, the Great David Copperfield (abbreviated DC) perform on stage.
The DC Experience began several feet north of the MGM Grand in a tiny place called Tix4Tonight that is the antithesis of the glamour and entertainment of the MGM Grand. The Las Vegas Strip Tix4Tonight outside Bally's sold us upper level tix for half price.
When you see DC, just like I would tell anybody who is shy that is about to see a comedian, the upper seats are the safest. DC may be a master magician, however, his talents exclude killing shyness. DC goes over and above picking people in the front seats. He will move to the center of the theater to pick the audience member. If that ain't enough for the shy or just people that do not want to perform, he will throw a Frisbee out into the audience and whoever catches it will be captured on the monitor before becoming a part of the DC show. If you are assigned a close-up seat, I recommend a few strong drinks at one of the MGM Grand bars before showtime. With that said, there is a part of me that thinks a few of the volunteers are plants.
As soon as I stepped on the magic carpet ride at 7:30 PM it was obvious that it didn't reach far. The Hollywood Theatre is a small and intimate room. Just like I remember it in the late 90s when I saw Wayne Newton, there are zero lousy seats in the house. It is so small that the beverages are sold in the casino proper. This is a room that evokes the old Vegas with table seating.
Before I talk about the DC show, try try try to understand that he's magic man. There is a natural tendency to dissect each of his tricks.With DC, the real magic is charisma, hard work, and the entertainment of magic.
The back-story of the show dates back to his childhood when he lost his best friend, a toy dinosaur named Frank. When the seats are filling up, Frank is displayed on the monitor. The show concludes with a magic effect where Frank suddenly appears from air as a Jurassic Park dinosaur on steroids.
DC took the audience on a magic carpet ride of amazing tricks. On stage there was nothing and through magic, a car appears. He opens a box that brings to life a cute laser alien that will costar with DC for several minutes. I believe the magic of this segment is DC's ventriloquist talent. My critique here is that the strong voice does not fit the adorable alien. The segment showcases a nice lesson in life that is believing through words. DC also APPEARS to make a rose dance. He also picks audience members (plants?) to pick a number. Ultimately out of a large display of cards,he picks the right number. The duck trick was one of the most memorable. DC presents a bucket that APPEARS empty and gives it to an audience member (plant?) to hold. Subsequently DC puts a duck into the box. Ultimately this long complicated trick ends with the duck flying out of the box. A spectacle of lasers, lighting, technology, and music compliment the Magic Man's performance.
As I write this in a suburb ten miles from the magical carpets of the MGM Grand, it is from the perspective of leaving a fan of the show (Maybe if I was forced to go onstage it would be a different review). DC is a consummate entertainer that showcases his gift of entertaining through magic on a four star magic carpet ride.
