  • To be frank, I'm no expert in the Native Americans. I know who they are, where some of them live, how they live, and some basic facts, from other museums I have visited in the past. I almost decided not to go to Heard Museum - thought it was really just a gimmick of feeding visitors information we know, and displaying their culture like any museum does these days. But I had an afternoon to spare, so I decided to drop by. Admission is free if you have a kid with you. There are no beverage or food allowed, not even bottled water. Boo. My journey started with a map that shows clearly how small the museum is. I followed the little path that the map displayed, and started learning about their rugs, sewing, and jewelry. Surprisingly, all the little paragraphs were easy reads, something that I can stop for a minute and learn. There were quotes from the Natives on walls, quotes that reflect the theme of each section of the museum. I thought that was super neat - seeing things from the perspective of the Natives. There were couple of sections where they played videos of interviews of the Natives, asking them about their living style, their thoughts on the outside world, etc. Some were pretty touching, and I couldn't finish watching one of them because THE FEELS. I went upstairs to the second floor, it looked disappointedly boring..until I walked into a door that led me to the whole boarding school section of the Native Americans. I was never aware of the existence of it, and I learned so much from each display. I read every single comment and caption, and every video they played. I probably spent about 45 minutes there! One of the few museums I have been to where I can say that I learned a lot. Tips: drink lots of water before you go, bring a light shirt with you if you get cold easily.
