  • As many others have noted, Paulette's is a pretty big disappointment. Really, when we have things like the Food Network blasting us with shots of Doughnut Plant in New York, or Voodoo Doughnuts in Portland, we're bound to have a few letdowns here. Even with my dampened expectations, though, I was still disappointed. We knew it wasn't going to be great almost immediately. They have representative doughnuts displayed behind glass beside the front counter - although colourful, they looked small, dry and not particularly inspired. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought, maybe these are just day-old's or plastic renditions they have out so they don't always have to replace them in the display...no luck, our selections looked exactly the same in the bag. We only got three - the Mojito, the Raspberry Balsamic and the Cookies and Cream. Our least unfavourite (for that is how we must describe it) was the Raspberry Balsamic, but they were all universally dry and bland. Have to admit we aren't huge fans of cake-doughnuts (much prefer yeast ones), but really, when you can't even do better than Timmy's, you know you're in trouble. Seriously, anybody can dip a dougnut into frosting, drizzle it with something colourful and make it visually impressive (though, even in that regard, my four year old nephew has them beat), but you need to have a good doughnut at the core (which they definitely don't), and you need to provide some kind of "wow" factor if you're going to charge nearly $3 per doughnut (give me a half dozen of Tim's Honey Crullers any day). On a positive note, the service was friendly and excellent, and the frozen hot chocolate was pretty good. But at the end of the day, those good points just serve to further underscore how mediocre their raison-d'etres are. I really, really wanted this to be better than it was.
