| - Yoga hive is a totally unpretentious, friendly, and relaxing place to practice. It's also incredibly accommodating to students in terms of its prices ( I love their 3 month summer package and their student rates are more than reasonable), honestly as a grad student I'm so pleased that the only studio I can regularly afford is also the best for me in the city.
Like any yoga studio, it's important to get a feel for what times and teachers best fit into your personal groove. As a PhD student, some semesters my practice is more a part of my life than others whether it's practicing often or taking breaks, yet every time I've come back to the hive it feels like I've come home . Instructors I've taken classes with a great deal remember me and remember my own weird quirks in my practice. I'm particularly fond of Cherilyn and Julie's classes. I feel so welcome in their classes and they pay careful attention to the pulse, energy, and skill levels of the group that day. There's nothing worse than a yoga class where the instructor doesn't have a sense of the ability levels of the students and moves at whatever pace they deem ideal for themselves (I've found these are usually the instructors who move chaotically around the room shouting and offer not adjustments). This is never the case with Julie and Cherilyn. I've found their classes to be challenging and relaxing when I need them to be. Once I've settled back into my practice a little more, I love taking Kimberly's classes for their intensity and her excellent adjustments. Some of my most exhilarating yoga experiences have been during and after Kimberly's classes. I've also had a great deal of fun in Maggie and Deza's classes. And I can't recommend the class for runners and cyclists enough (especially from Kimberly ) I always need attention for my tight hamstrings and hips. I've also really appreciated the challenges, starting my second February challenge soon!
Most importantly when I'm at the yoga hive I feel taken care of and valued for my own practice as disjointed as it is. The space, students and teachers are not competitive, don't make you feel guilty for not having designer yogi clothes, and they appreciate that the time you give to your practice is about your own personal growth in mind and body.
