| - Went to this theater to see Lionel Richie in concert, courtesy of SiriusXM. I'm a subscriber, and though I was only able to get put on a waiting list for free tickets for the remaining available dates, they were in my in-box the next morning. The date was also my birthday, so it was a nice present!
I think this is the biggest theater at Planet Hollywood, and it takes up the center core of the shopping area. It's arena seating, but seems much smaller than the arenas at other hotels.
If I were taller and wider, I think I'd probably find this theater pretty uncomfortable. The seats weren't much wider than your usual coach airplane seat, but I noticed that there was much less legroom. I had no problem with that, of course, but I can imagine that anyone of taller stature might. Less legroom than a coach seat is an unthinkably stupid and mercenary design.
The main problem with the theater is that the stage is peculiarly shaped. One part on the right protrudes out, not straight out, but angled to the right. That's great if you happen to be sitting stage right. The configuration invites the performer to play to the right side of the audience. And where were we sitting? Stage left! Even though our seats weren't all that far back, it was nearly impossible to avoid watching the entire concert on the screen projection. Clearly, part of this problem has to be attributed to the performer. Although Lionel walked around a bit, he never once came to the left side of the stage.
The actual performance was terrific, but I'm not reviewing that here. I sure can't complain about tickets I didn't pay for, but I will think twice before seeing another show at Axis because of that weird stage and the cramped seats.
