| - Despite how long they've been around, I can't say I've ever had much of an urge to stay at the MGM Grand. Besides being (relatively) far away (only Mandalay, Excalibur, and Luxor are further south), I never really had a reason to stay here (my friends prefer hanging around Bellagio, Cosmo, and Caesar's). However, for a business trip paid for by the company? How could I say no to trying some place new that I could Yelp about later that wasn't going to cost me money? ;)
As one of the first "mega casinos" that now line The Strip, MGM Grand has changed quite a bit over the years (I still remember their old "Wizard of Oz" theme). One thing hasn't changed though - just how massive the property is. A sprawling casino, multiple towers and theaters, a variety of restaurants and shops, an arena for boxing matches and UFC fights, a huge pool area, a massive, Hakkasan, a multi-floor conference center...yeah, this place is definitely "grand" in size.
While the resort as a whole is pretty impressive, I really can't say the same about the King bed room I had in the West Tower. Given the hotel's age, I didn't expect the modern elements that Aria or Cosmo have, but it still underwhelmed. All of the basics were covered (decently comfortable bed, toiletries, ironing board, hairdryer, safe, wi-fi, though no mini-bar, which I wouldn't have used anyways), but the room was TINY. Not usually an issue in Vegas, but it was in this case since I was holed up doing work. I mean, it met a sort of minimum threshold, but a little more space wouldn't have hurt...

Beyond its sheer size though, the best thing MGM has going for itself has got to be its restaurant and entertainment offerings. In addition to Hakkasan (which is a pretty fun spot...), there's Tom Colicchio's CraftSteak (dying to try), restaurants from Emeril Lagasse, Wolfgang Puck, Morimoto, Joel Rubochon, and Michael Mina, a food court (bleh), Cirque's Ka show, Top Golf next door, a large game room/brewcade with a VR experience, and even TWO Starbucks. Not too shabby!
Comparing all of their respective amenities and rooms, it makes sense that MGM Grand's rates are comparable to Planet Hollywood's, which is a tier right below Bellagio and Aria. However, for me, PH is a better option, if only for its location to everything else. If/when I'm in town to watch the Sharks beat the Golden Knights right across the street, though? MGM Grand might not be a bad option. I'll just have to make sure to stay in the Grand Tower, which is quite a bit nicer from what I can gather.
