I wish I had discovered the joy of kayaking in Pittsburgh about five months ago! What a beautiful way to spend a warm fall Sunday. This review is for the Sixth Street launch very close to PNC Park. This seems like a nice business. It would have been five stars except for the fact that it's not the easiest to find and the folks need to work on their instructions speeches. I stood by the guys down by the river for a couple of minutes looking eager and only when I spoke up did they direct me to the desk. Then I was confused by where I was supposed to go next. (The life vest outfitter had stepped away so I went back to the launchers who redirected me again. Perhaps I was just being dimwitted? Still, I think some work on the banter and better signage would solve all these issues.) Once you do this once, however, you'll be a pro and want to do it every nice weekend. I want to try to get closer to the main part of downtown and the Point fountain on my next trip. Pro Tip: Use the restroom in one of the restaurants before you suit up as there are no facilities - not even a Porto-Potty. Another Pro Tip: Be sure to take advantage of their free lockers and buy yourself a bottle of water. Third Pro-Tip: Ride your bike to the launch - there's not much in the way of convenient parking at this particular spot. Especially when a Pirates or Steelers game is going on. There's plenty of bike parking though.
